MORE THAN AN EXTRAORDINARY GP
I rarely write positive reviews usually I write only when something has gone wrong So this is exceptional
Mathias has been my GP since July 2023 I have watched a gifted doctor and young man mature into an extraordinary physician and more importantly to me, an extraordinary human being
I am not a MD but medicine has surrounded my life: my father was an internationally known physician; my mother, brothers & children are doctors I say this carefully:
FOR ME MATHIAS SVANEVIK IS THE BEST GP I HAVE ENCOUNTERED NOT ONLY IN OSLO BUT IN NORWAY
He knows medicine, but more importantly he knows the patient is a human being before a diagnosis, lab value or fifteen-minute appointment
I once heard him say: “I give my patients not the time they are allocated but the time they need” That is Mathias
He listens and explains You can speak about body or mind, pain, fear, embarrassment or life. You can simply be yourself fanti .His humour never trivialises suffering; it can make you smile in pain and somehow make the pain smaller
His room is an oasis of peace, reflection and human warmth, especially in a city where people often ignore each other on public transport and elsewhere. Perhaps my Mediterranean temperament makes this more colourful than the average Norwegian review. I accept that
What impresses me most is his absence of medical arrogance. A great doctor needs knowledge, curiosity and humility: medicine is vast, nobody knows everything and the patient may know something important about his own body
This summer Mathias left a clinic shared with other GPs for greater independence. Success can make ego enter the room first. With Mathias I saw the opposite:
HE BECAME MORE HUMBLE
Later, returning to his former clinic for specialists, I sensed some reserve when his move arose, almost like professional envy. I may be wrong; an impression is not a fact. What mattered was the contrast: no triumphalism, no “now I am the boss”. The more independent he became, the humbler he seemed
That is maturity. Humility is clinical: the doctor who thinks he knows everything eventually stops listening Mathias still listens
Doctor and man form one unit. His knowledge gives confidence, judgment reassurance, listening dignity, humour relief and humanity trust
Five stars for everything. If Legelisten had HUMANITY I would want a sixth star
Thank you Mathias for being my doctor and for the man I have watched you become
MATHIAS I LOVE U
